Eighth grade students at Murphy and Gelinas junior high schools recently experienced a powerful theatrical performance that brought history to life. On March 4, Theatre Three presented “From the Fires: Voices of the Holocaust” in each school’s auditorium, offering a moving and educational portrayal of the Holocaust.

The play follows the story of Rachel Gold, a Jewish teenager in Berlin, as she faces the increasing restrictions of Nazi rule. Her journey unfolds from the enactment of the Nuremberg Laws in 1937 to her deportation to Auschwitz and the harrowing forced march near the end of World War II. Through a deeply personal lens, the performance aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the Holocaust and complement their social studies and English curriculum.

Following the performance, students participated in a question-and-answer session with the playwright and actors, engaging in thoughtful discussions and reflecting on the historical significance of the Holocaust.

Wednesday featured a calming “Student Zen Den,” and Thursday encouraged students to write positive affirmations on glass windows and with sidewalk chalk. The week concluded with therapy dogs from Love on a Leash and Canine Companions visiting on Thursday and Friday.

A special thank-you to Gelinas Student Government, Mrs. Carlson and Mrs. Roberts for making this week possible.

Paint Night Brings Schools Together

P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s student government organized a special event for the fifth and sixth graders at Nassakeag, allowing them to experience what a middle school event feels like.

In collaboration with the Nassakeag Student Council, both clubs sold tickets at their respective schools for a fun-filled Paint Night. The event featured Gelinas Principal Corinne Keane as the guest artist. Each student created a beautiful painting of the original Gelinas mascot, the Gelinas Viking. Additionally, they had the opportunity to ask the principal and current Gelinas students questions about their experiences in junior high school. The students who participated found the experience to be very positive, with many expressing that they have fewer questions about the upcoming transition to middle school.

Do you know which states border Lake Michigan or where Mount Kilimanjaro is located? Many of P.J. Gelinas and R.C. Murphy junior high schools’ seventh and eighth grade students demonstrated their knowledge of these and many other topics as social studies teachers administered geography quizzes in their classrooms this January to identify class representatives for the schools’ buildingwide Geography Bees.

On Tuesday, Jan. 14, students showcased their geographic knowledge during building-level Geography Bees, facilitated by Dr. Cone, Mr. Ehlers, Mr. Pelosi and Ms. Waite. Congratulations to our P.J.
