Mr. Rieckhoff’s seventh grade technology class at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School transformed the hallway into a racetrack as students tested their rubber band-powered cars. After weeks of designing and building their vehicles using saws, drills and hand tools, the students were ready to wind them up and watch them race.

Each student brought their creativity to life, designing cars inspired by their favorite TV shows, movies and even candy. They experimented with different combinations of wheels and rubber bands to maximize distance, with several cars traveling an impressive 60 feet. This hands-on project showcased engineering, creativity and a whole lot of fun.

Seventh grade students at Gelinas and Murphy Junior High Schools attended an important presentation about internet safety on Nov. 8. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ of New York and the Federal Bureau of Investigation provided education regarding the risks of online communications including the use of social media and gaming platforms. They discussed privacy concerns, especially when students are interacting with strangers and empowered students to protect themselves and each other. Information and resources were provided on how students can report if they are targeted, threatened or victimized online, in order to protect their physical safety and emotional wellbeing.

Last week’s Parent University event focused on the same content. Parents were taught about a variety of ways that children of all ages use social media platforms and gaming applications to connect with others, including peers and strangers. Parents learned how children can be targeted and exploited online, and the red flags that parents should be looking for when kids are engaging online. Practical tips and current intel were provided to help keep kids safe and smart online at any age, including how to teach them to protect themselves when adults cannot be there to intervene.

The Food Truck Challenge drove into Gelinas Junior High School once again, giving eighth graders the opportunity to create their own business. Students brainstormed an idea for a food truck business, then came up with a business plan, menu and creative truck designs. The projects went on display in the Gelinas library, where students and staff members could vote for the best truck design, best overall theme and best menu.
