Honoring the Lunar New Year

Prekindergarten students thumbnail263952

Prekindergarten students in Dawn McNally’s classes at W.S. Mount Elementary School helped to ring in the Year of the Wood Snake with several Lunar New Year celebrations.
Both classes had parades through the halls of Mount for the older classes to watch. The students wore red, played instruments and followed a large teacher-made dragon head with a long tail.

Parents of students in the morning and afternoon programs also helped to bring aspects of the celebration to life. In the morning class, Mr. and Mrs. Chen taught the class how to make dumplings using Play-Doh. Each student proudly took their creation home. In the afternoon class, Mrs. Li presented a PowerPoint she made about the holiday. She brought in spring rolls for the students to sample, and they each also took home a red lantern and a red envelope filled with gold foil-wrapped chocolate coins.

W.S. Mount Elementary School kindergarten students also worked to celebrate the holiday. With the help of Ms. Kane, Ms. Guistino and Ms. Wan, they created a gorgeous showcase display in honor of Lunar New Year. The students made the lanterns around the outside of the display.

Students Engineer Candy Parachutes

Fifth graders at Mount Elementary School. thumbnail263336

Fifth graders at Mount Elementary School created their own parachutes during science lab after reading the book, “Christmas from Heaven.” Students first learned about U.S. Army Air Corps pilot, Gail Halvorsen, who flew supplies into Berlin after World War II. He noticed children would line the fences near the air base and decided to send them candy fastened to small parachutes. His gesture became known around the world and a symbol of hope.

Students engineered their own parachutes using coffee filters, string and paper cups to mimic the ones Halvorsen dropped from his plane in the 1940s.

Students in the Spirit of Giving with Stuff-A-Bus

Students in front of school bus thumbnail263275

The Murphy Junior High School student government carried out its annual Stuff-A-Bus campaign on Dec. 17, collecting hundreds of toy donations from students across the district. Murphy students rode in a school bus to Mount, Minnesauke and Arrowhead Elementary Schools, collecting donations the elementary students received during their respective toy drives. They loaded up the bus with toys, puzzles, books and games, which will be brought to the Gerald J. Ryan Outreach Center in Wyandanch.
